It was Thanksgiving, so I was graced with the presence of MeeMaw and PeePaw. This also means an adventure around Houston. This trip we decided to experience some Texas history. We headed out to Washington on the Brazos. This is where the country of Texas declared its independence from Mexico. This is where Texas became Texas.
The first place we saw on the property was Independence Hall. This is the place where all the delegates met to put together and sign the Declaration of Independence. It is awesome to know that my state is cooler than yours!!!
Next, we took a stroll along the Brazos River. It was a gloomy day and not much to see. However, PeePaw did try to teach me how to skip rocks. He is pretty good. I still need some practice, but it was fun. I hopped into my wagon so Pa could pull me for the rest of the walk.
There was also a living farm on the property. The farm was owned by the last president of Texas, Dr. Anson Jones. The folks there follow his diaries and books so that they can recreate the daily activities from the farm in the 1850s. There was a lady out gardening, and when we showed up, she went over grabbed some of the chickens so I could pet them. I even helped water some of her plants. There was a man who was repairing some of the equipment that they use each day. Unfortunately, he said that the ox they use in the fields was not there that day.
This place was beautiful. A lot of history. Tons of fun. It was a great way to spend an afternoon outside of Houston with Meemaw and PeePaw.
