We woke up early, like real early and I had no idea why. Both Ma and Pa were excited. They said we were going to see animals in the wild. I thought, sounds good to me, I like animals.
We headed down and got some breakfast while we waited for our tour guide. We were going to head out with Jackson Hole Grand Expeditions for several hours. The guide was going to take us all over Grand Teton National Park. During the winter time a lot of the animals come down into the valley around Jackson which creates some great photo opportunities. He arrived. We got my seat loaded in the SUV and off we went.
We had to start the day before sunrise because the sunrise was so epic this time of year. We got out into the valley just as the sun started to peak above the horizon. Clouds were still low. The air was a warm -11F. Ma and Pa were amazed. Pa stopped several times to snap some photos of the sunrise across the valley.
We kept driving so we could find the bison. A few minutes later we saw a large herd. And man did it create the perfect scene. The bison appeared to be digging through the snow to find the grass right in front of a snow covered mountain. The sun was coming up behind us and as it passed the horizon it would hit the top of the mountain. It eventually made its way all the way down. But what an epic sunrise it was.
Next, we were off to get some scenic views. There was a river that was constantly flowing so it would not freeze. This early in the morning there was still a fog hovering over the water. It had not snowed in several days put the pines still had snow on them. It was really an amazing scene but I wanted to see more animals.
We drove slowly down the road looking for antlers in the snow. We came upon a family of moose. They were just chillin’, haha get it, in the snow. They were very cool creatures. The antlers were just amazing.
We had one more stop. We went to go find some big horn sheep. Talk about a cool life style. These guys live, eat and sleep on the side of mountains. Except when cars are driving on the road below. Then they would come down and lick the salt off of the cars.
It was a big day and big trip. We headed back to the hotel to pack up and get ready to leave the next morning. I think I like the snow……..for vacation.
