Guenther House Waffles

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas has some excellent food, including some of the best breakfast tacos around!  We got our breakfast taco fill several times on this trip.  But what really stood out was our trip to Guenther House on Easter morning.  This is where the legend of the Guenther House Sweet Cream Waffles began.

Our trip to San Antonio included all of the classic spots.  We did the Riverwalk boat ride, where I tried to escape several times.  Pa insisted I stay in the boat. We went by the Alamo but did not go in.  The line was super long!  We also headed over to the Botanical Garden, where I tried to swim in the grotto in the fern garden.  Pa caught me at the last minute. Finally, I saw some kids playing on a splash pad in the park across from our hotel.  Ha, too slow this time Pa!

On the last day of our trip, we decided to stroll down the Riverwalk, away from the crowds.  It was a nice walk on a cool Texas spring morning.  Guenther House was at the end of our walk.

The setting for the restaurant was just perfect.  There was a patio surrounded by these beautiful oak trees that had to be a hundred years old.  It was such a lovely day, we sat outside and watched the Easter crowd roll in.

Pa ordered some coffee, and when it arrived, he went into some sort of trance.  He didn’t speak for several minutes.  He wrapped both of his hands around the cup and nestled it under his nose.  Pa is so strange!  After a few minutes of just smelling and a couple of sips, he declared it one of the best cups of coffee he has ever had.

I took that time to examine the menu in full detail and decided on waffles.  I love a good waffle, and these did not disappoint.  For me, the key to a good waffle is having a nice crispy crunch with each bite that is covered in syrup.  The best waffles are the ones in which the syrup pools in the pockets with only a little soaking in.

We enjoyed our morning at Guenther House.  Pa drank what seemed like a hundred cups of coffee, and I ate every bite of my waffle!  It was glorious. Oh yeah, Ma was there too, but I guess we kind of forgot about her for a while because we were so wrapped up in enjoying our food.

Pa went inside to buy some coffee beans to take home to enjoy later.  While he was looking around, he found a bag of sweet cream waffle mix.  This was the beginning of our obsession with Guenther House.  4 and half years later, we still order the waffle mix and coffee several times a year, and each bite always brings a giant smile to my face!

  5. While waffle mix is resting, begin heating up the waffle iron.  If you use a pan spray, apply to the waffle iron and close for 2 minutes.  Do this in between cooking each waffle.
  6. Pour waffle batter into the waffle iron and cook per waffle iron instructions.  Our waffle iron can hold 2/3’s of a cup and cooks for 6-7 minutes.
  7. Once done, remove and enjoy!
