Kenya is a wild place, literally. At our second camp, Offbeat Mara, we had to be escorted from our tent to dinner after dark. On the first night, our escort told us to “move quickly.” Then he shone his flashlight into the brush about 30-40 yards away, and we could see a pair of eyes…

Kaiventures
These stories are my adventures through the world told from a kids perspective. I welcome you to travel along with me on my adventures. The stories told here mostly accurate, somewhat exaggerated, and occasionally made up.
My Family
My Ma is a geographer. Specifically, a human geographer with an emphasis on tourism. She has written a few textbooks on the geography of tourism.
My Pa is in the restaurant business. He loves to cook and is pretty adventurous in the kitchen. He even went to culinary school in Italy.
My Perspective
From the day I was born, I was destined to be a world traveler. I had my passport at four months and my first stamp at seven months. Ma operates under a geographers rule (I really think it’s her own rule, but I ain’t complaining), visit a new country every year. To date, we have been successful!
I hope you enjoy my Kaiventures.
Swiss Fondue
Switzerland is a magical place any time of year, but in the wintertime, it becomes spectacular. The train trips through the snow-covered mountains, the sledding, and the skiing all create a wonderful experience. The Trip One of my favorite parts of our trip was the Bernina Express through the Swiss Alps and into northern Italy. …
Ohio Buckeyes
Ohio, for me, is about spending time with family and escaping the Texas heat for a week. We always head to Ohio during the summer. My week in Ohio is my own personal summer camp. We fish, play tennis, ride horses, and eat ice cream. What more could a boy ask for! Well, in honor…
Guenther House Waffles
San Antonio San Antonio, Texas has some excellent food, including some of the best breakfast tacos around! We got our breakfast taco fill several times on this trip. But what really stood out was our trip to Guenther House on Easter morning. This is where the legend of the Guenther House Sweet Cream Waffles began….
Mac n Cheese
The Canadian Rockies in winter are just stunning. Cold, but stunning. Ma loves mountains in the wintertime, so we headed up to the Banff area for a few days to see some snow and relax. Ironically, we did not see any actual snowfall in Alberta, but Houston saw about an inch the day after we…
i feel sLOVEnia!
Shhhhh… there is a hidden country in Europe that not a lot of people know about! I don’t even want to mention its name. It still feels unexplored by tourists. There is incredible nature, amazing castles and churches, sea and skiing, and my favorite, some amazing culinary adventures. See several posts about our trip in…
The Jerk Chicken Shack
We did not plan to go to Jamaica. Just ten days earlier, we had to cancel a trip to Sri Lanka because I came down with pneumonia hours before we were scheduled to leave. We were all pretty sad, but my favorite aunt suggested we tag along on their trip to Jamaica. So we got…
A Pancake to Remember
Bonaire is a hidden gem in the southern part of the Caribbean. It is known for its scuba diving, I mean really known for its scuba diving. When we went there in 2016 there were more people underwater than were on the beach. It was quite amazing. I have a few stories from our week…
An Italian Pizza Story
We have a rule in our family: always try pizza whenever you are traveling, no matter where you are. Find a pizza. While we were in Switzerland, we made a short trip to Italy (see A night in Tirano). Obviously we had to find some great, authentic Italian pizza. This was actually my second time…
Kenya – Mara North Safari
The craziness continued in Kenya as we headed to the Mara North Conservancy to the Offbeat Mara Camp. If you want to see how we got here then take a moment to read the previous post, Kenya – Ekorian Mugie Safari. After a couple of hops on a plane we landed at Mara North Conservancy. …
